Selecting the Right Type Desiccant- An Overview

Packaging is one of the primary concerns when manufacturing Food products and pharmaceutical drugs. You’d have to be especially careful when choosing a desiccant or sorbet for your product. Desiccants are a crucial part of packaging as they help prevent damage through humidity and moisture and extend the life span of the food and drugs

Moisture control is crucial in many industries, from food packaging to pharmaceuticals, electronics, and industrial storage. choose the right desiccant can extend product shelf life, prevent damage, and ensure products quality. do you choose the right one? Here are some tips:

What is Desiccant?

Desiccant is a hygroscopic moisture-absorbing materials that is retaining water molecules from the air. that help control humidity and prevent condensation. They are commonly found in small packets inside product packaging, but they also come in bulk forms for industrial use. While transporting good using large desiccants bag inside of shipping container for protecting cargo condensation.

Performance Level

The properties of moisture adsorption for different silica gel and molecular sieves differ. While molecular sieve offers great adsorptive capacity for lower humidity levels, silica gel performs quite poorly in an atmosphere with low humidity. Both desiccants, however, have almost the same moisture retention range at a room temperature of 25°C and a humidity level of 40%. The most common types of desiccants include:

  • Silica Gel (SIO2 * H2O) – Silica gel is a porous silicon dioxide gel that adsorbs moisture molecules by physical adsorption, making it one of the most widely used desiccants because it has very high absorbent properties, is inert, non-toxic, and stable. It is available in various forms, such as beads, granules, and packets, and thus can be used in a variety of applications and packaging to prevent moisture damage from products during storage and transportation.
  • Clay Desiccants (Montmorillonite Clay)  Caly Desiccants also known as Montmorillonite Clay usually made using natural materials are non-hazardous and have high absorption capacities. Clay desiccants absorb moisture by adsorption onto their surface and are widely used in various industries such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, and food packaging to protect against moisture-induced damage.
  • Molecular Sieves (Synthetic Zeolite, also known as Aluminosilicate) – Molecular sieve desiccants are also very highly adsorptive desiccant materials that have uniform pore sizes, which allow them to selectively adsorb certain molecules and compounds from a mixture and are particularly effective in removing water and other contaminants from gases and liquids in industrial processes. Molecular sieves find applications in drying solvents, natural gas, air conditioning systems, and petrochemical refining.
  • Calcium Chloride – that is moisture absorber best for high-humidity environments, often used in bulk applications like cargo protection. It is a highly effective desiccant available that works well even at low humidity levels and can absorb several times its weight in water. Calcium chloride is commonly used as a desiccant in shipping containers, storage facilities, and in industrial applications where high humidity is a risk, as it absorbs moisture from the air efficiently.
  • Activated Carbon – Activated carbon desiccants are a highly porous form of carbon that have a large surface area and excellent adsorption characteristics, that allow the material to efficiently trap moisture, odor, and other impurities present in the atmosphere. These commercial desiccants are widely used in applications that require moisture and odor control, such as food packaging, pharmaceuticals, and electronics.

When should you use silica gel?

Silica gel is most suited for products with a stable temperature in the storage and a high relative humidity level. With its non-toxic, inert, and very stable properties, silica gel has become a popular choice as a desiccant for many Industrial applications.

When should you use a molecular sieve?

While molecular sieve is a lot more rapid and aggressive in terms of moisture adsorption, this desiccant performs better for products that need instant protection from the moisture in their environment.

This sorbet is also very stable for a more extensive temperature range while maintaining its high properties of moisture retention. However, you should be cautious when choosing the proper dosage when using products with strict RH requirements.

While When Choosing a Desiccant keep thing mind

Start with the following checklist

1. Is your Products being Moisture Sensitivity?

Different products require different levels of moisture protection. For example:

  • Food products need FDA-approved desiccants like silica gel to maintain freshness.
  • Electronics require low-humidity solutions like molecular sieves to prevent short circuits and corrosion.
  • Pharmaceuticals demand precise moisture control to maintain product efficacy.

2. Check Environment and Humidity Levels

The effectiveness of a desiccant depends on the surrounding environment:

  • High-humidity areas: Calcium chloride absorbs moisture aggressively, making it ideal for long-haul shipments.
  • Moderate-humidity areas: Silica gel and clay desiccants work well for general-purpose applications.
  • Low-humidity environments: Molecular sieves provide superior protection, especially for sensitive products.

3. Which Types of Packaging and Storage Conditions area

  • Small product packaging: Use individual desiccant packets for food, supplements, or electronics.
  • Bulk storage: Consider larger desiccant bags or container desiccants for shipping goods overseas.
  • Airtight packaging: Requires a desiccant with a longer lifespan to maintain effectiveness over time.

4.Must have Regulatory Compliance

Certain industries have strict regulations regarding desiccant use:

  • Food-grade desiccants must comply with FDA or EU regulations.
  • Pharmaceutical desiccants must meet USP (United States Pharmacopeia) standards.
  • Electronics often require RoHS-compliant (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) desiccants.

5. Cost and Reusability

  • Silica gel and molecular sieves can be regenerated and reused by heating.
  • Clay desiccants are inexpensive but have a limited lifespan.
  • Calcium chloride is highly effective but not reusable.

6.Does Desiccants have shelf life?

Desiccants have a shelf life1- 5 years, it is based on type and storage conditions and original packaging. Silica gel and molecular sieves can last indefinitely if stored in airtight packaging, can be reactivated by heating, while clay-based desiccants typically last 1–2 years.  If you Proper storage in sealed containers extends their effectiveness

Choosing the Right Desiccant for Your Industry

While selecting the perfect adsorbent for your product, it’s also important to go for the right product with the right desiccation range, as each range serves a different purpose. For instance, when choosing molecular sieves, there are several variants you can choose from, including 4A, 3A, and 13X. Type 4A is the most popular choice in the pharmaceutical industry.

At Supplier, we understand how essential it is to use the right desiccant for your products. That’s why our team offers a variety of desiccants developed for several different applications. The two most used are molecular sieve and silica. We also offer active alumina, silica gel orange crystals, moisture-free packaging solutions, and more.
